Skoden Coffee & Tea, an Indigenous-owned milk tea shop, is making waves in Phoenix by blending traditional Native American ingredients with modern activism.
Founded by Natasha John, the shop began as a pop-up in the Navajo Nation’s capital, Window Rock, before relocating to Phoenix in late 2023.
John initially hesitated to move south, aiming to create a food hub on the reservation to address the area’s food desert.
However, with support from her team, she seized the opportunity to establish a permanent location inside For The People, a Phoenix furniture store, which led to the current success of the business.
Now settled inside Central Records, Skoden Coffee & Tea offers a unique menu inspired by Indigenous cuisine and Japanese “kissa” culture, where tea drinking is paired with music.
Popular drinks include the Diné Matcha Latte, Peach and Pecan Latte, and Honey Lavender Lez Love, while the pastries, such as blue corn donuts and croissants, also reflect Native culinary traditions.
Skoden’s commitment to revitalizing ancestral ingredients, such as Navajo tea and sumac, allows customers to connect with Indigenous culture through food and beverages. Co-owner Jo Manuelito emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with traditions that were lost during colonization.
Skoden’s rise in the local community is also marked by its inclusivity. John, who identifies as both Indigenous and LGBTQ+, has faced challenges but remains committed to fostering a safe, welcoming environment for all.
The shop actively supports other local businesses and hosts fundraising events to raise awareness of social issues.
With a growing social media presence and a loyal customer base, Skoden Coffee & Tea is not only serving delicious milk tea but also uplifting Indigenous voices and culture in the heart of Phoenix.
