An unexpected shortage of tapioca pearls in Metro Manila has left milk tea chains and their loyal customers in a state of frustration, but the creative spirit of local shops has brought a delicious solution: raisins as an alternative add-on!
One milk tea shop owner shared, “We’ve had customers cancel their orders once they find out we’re out of pearls. If this shortage persists, we might run out of patience from constantly saying, ‘We’re out of pearls, sorry!’”
One devastated customer expressed their disappointment, saying, “I can’t get my usual large wintermelon milk tea with extra pearls anymore. It’s sad—just like my relationship, no more add-ons.”
As tapioca pearl shipments continue to face delays, some milk tea shops have been forced to limit online orders. In a bid to keep customers happy, others are offering “free raisin add-ons” with every in-store purchase.
