Mixue Ice Cream & Tea, a popular milk tea brand, is facing a food safety scandal following troubling reports about hygiene practices at its Ningju New World outlet in Yichang.
An investigation uncovered that the store was using overnight lemon and orange slices to prepare drinks, which raised serious concerns about the freshness and safety of the ingredients.
Disturbing footage from reporters revealed flies hovering around the store, including landing on milk tea cup lids, highlighting a clear disregard for cleanliness.
Employees admitted to storing leftover fruit slices in a cabinet under the counter and in stainless steel containers at room temperature in a back corner. When questioned, one staff member expressed fear about consuming the drinks, admitting, “I won’t dare to drink it again; I’m a bit scared.”
Further comments from employees revealed troubling attitudes towards food safety, with one remarking, “We can use this tomorrow,” indicating a lack of proper hygiene protocols.
In response to the revelations, the Yichang Market Regulation Bureau dispatched officials to investigate the store. However, when they arrived, they found the shop under renovation. While officials were unable to reach the management team, they did discover improperly labeled ingredients stored on the second floor, which were confiscated for further investigation.
Mixue’s customer service team has promised to address the issue, assuring customers that the matter would be thoroughly documented and that feedback would be provided.
Store manager Mr. Zou acknowledged that the incident violated operational standards and vowed to implement stronger oversight to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
