Milk Tea Brands Embrace Traditional Chinese Medicine To Captivate Young Consumers

Beverage companies in China are tapping into the rising popularity of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to meet the growing demand for health-conscious drinks, particularly among younger consumers. A standout example of this trend is the surge in TCM-infused milk teas, which combine traditional herbal benefits with the beloved taste of milk tea.

One prominent player in this market is Tianfu Cola, a domestic time-honoured brand that has successfully reinvented its formula to appeal to today’s youth. Initially famous for its herbal-infused cola, Tianfu has expanded its offerings to include beverages featuring TCM ingredients such as White Peony Root, Chinese Angelica, and Agastache rugosa. This blend of international flavors and traditional remedies has propelled the company’s sales to new heights, with its annual order volume increasing by more than 60% in 2024.

Tianfu’s recent collaborations, such as its partnership with Taiji Group to co-develop a new cola incorporating Agastache rugosa, highlight the growing integration of TCM into modern drink products. This new herbal cola, launched in 2024, quickly became a hit, with sales surpassing 1 million bottles. Its success underscores the appeal of combining health benefits with familiar, popular beverages like cola and milk tea.

Additionally, other companies like Qingdao Laoshan Mineral Water Co. are capitalizing on this trend by incorporating TCM herbs into sparkling waters and other drinks. Laoshan’s White Flower Snake Grass Water, which helps alleviate summer heat, has gained significant attention, boosted by social media influencers and collaborations with major brands like Tims.

Beyond these mainstream brands, many Chinese medical institutions are also joining the TCM beverage revolution, offering non-profit milk tea options that blend herbal elements to create unique, health-conscious drinks. Chongqing Jiangbei Hospital of TCM, for example, has been experimenting with modern milk tea recipes, introducing TCM processing techniques to attract a younger audience.

As the demand for healthy, flavorful drinks continues to rise, TCM milk tea is poised to become a staple in China’s beverage market, offering a new way for consumers to enjoy traditional herbal benefits while indulging in their favorite drinks.
