Milk tea has become a beloved drink for many, with some like Li Mingchun, 28, consuming it up to six times a week. For him, the sweet beverage is the perfect companion to a meal or a post-workout treat, and he loves sharing it with friends. However, recent research has revealed that frequent milk tea consumption may have harmful effects on mental health.
A study conducted by Tsinghua University and the Central University of Finance and Economics found that milk tea addiction is linked to increased risks of depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts, particularly among young people. The study, based on a survey of 5,281 college students, discovered that many participants consumed between four to six cups per week. The addiction was associated with sugar cravings, guilt over consumption, and an inability to stop drinking the beverage.
The research suggests that the high sugar content in milk tea could disrupt emotional regulation and stress management, making it a potential factor in mental health issues. The study has sparked concerns among experts who are calling for stricter regulations on the milk tea industry, including limitations on advertising and education about its potential mental health impacts.
As the milk tea market continues to grow, reaching a size of 333.4 billion yuan in 2023, experts warn that consumers may need to be more aware of the emotional and health consequences of overindulging in these sweet drinks.
