Sip The Change: Xiangpiaopiao Opens Its First Fresh Drinks Store

In a bold move that has sent ripples through the beverage industry, Xiangpiaopiao Food, China’s leading instant milk tea brand, has officially opened its first fresh tea drinks store. This exciting development comes as the company seeks to adapt to evolving consumer preferences, and it has already sparked a surge in its stock prices. As of 2:34 PM, shares were up 5.3 percent, trading at CNY16.16 (approximately USD2.20), reflecting the market’s enthusiasm for this new venture.

Nestled in Hangzhou, the inaugural store offers a delightful selection of nine fresh milk tea beverages, with prices ranging from CNY9 to CNY12 (USD1.20 to USD1.60). The aim of this store is clear: to foster direct engagement with consumers and gather valuable feedback on their light milk tea offerings. Staff members enthusiastically shared that this initiative is designed to enhance customer experience and refine product development based on real-time insights.

Founded in 2005, Xiangpiaopiao has established itself as a titan in the instant milk tea market, boasting the largest market share in China. However, the brand has faced challenges in recent years, experiencing a revenue decline from 2020 to 2022 as fresh milk tea gained popularity among consumers. Recognizing this shift, branding expert Zhan Junhao believes that opening physical stores will bolster consumer interactions and generate buzz online, ultimately strengthening Xiangpiaopiao’s marketing efforts. Yet, he cautions that the brand’s legacy as an instant product may pose hurdles in gaining credibility within the fresh beverage segment.

Despite these challenges, Xiangpiaopiao’s financial performance shows promise. In the first three quarters of this year, net profit skyrocketed more than fivefold to CNY17.7 million (USD2.4 million) compared to the previous year. However, excluding nonrecurring items, the company reported a loss of CNY5.8 million (USD794,680), while revenue dipped by 2 percent to CNY1.9 billion (USD260.3 million).

The introduction of fresh milk tea products marks a significant pivot for Xiangpiaopiao as it seeks to capture a broader audience in an increasingly competitive market.
