Bubble Tea Trend Expands In Rhode Island: New Shops Cater To Growing Demand

The bubble tea trend continues to expand, capturing the interest of consumers and entrepreneurs alike. While coffee has long been a staple beverage in Rhode Island—where coffee milk is the official state drink—bubble tea, also known as boba tea, is emerging as a formidable competitor. This Taiwanese-origin drink, which combines tea, milk, sweeteners, and chewy tapioca balls, has seen a significant rise in popularity, particularly among younger demographics.

The Rise of Bubble Tea

In 2024, bubble tea has gained a substantial foothold in the beverage market, with a variety of flavors and innovative combinations enticing customers. From matcha-flavored milk tea to unique options like coconut and taro milk teas, the versatility of bubble tea has contributed to its appeal. The retail sector for bubble tea is booming, with new shops opening across cities like Cranston, Rhode Island.

Franklin Paulino, the city’s economic development director, has observed this trend firsthand. He notes that bubble tea shops located along Park Avenue and near schools are thriving due to their vibrant atmospheres and diverse menu offerings. “These trendy spots have become social hubs where friends gather after school and enjoy creative and nutritious beverages,” Paulino states.

New Additions to the Market

The growth of bubble tea shops in Cranston is set to continue with the upcoming opening of Angkor Boba Tea House on Reservoir Avenue. Paulino highlights that these establishments typically require less space than traditional restaurants, making it easier for new businesses to find suitable locations.

Among the existing options in Cranston are several notable bubble tea shops:

  1. Boba Tea Lova & Snack Bar: Located at 1375 Park Ave., this cozy shop has been serving customers for nearly two years. It offers an array of drinks, including unique flavors like Creme Brûlée milk tea and Butterfly Pea milk tea, alongside snacks such as mochi donuts and waffles.
  2. Gong Cha: This well-known bubble tea franchise has recently opened a location at 40 Sockanosset Cross Rd. Unit 120. With over 1,500 stores worldwide since its inception in Taiwan, Gong Cha offers popular drinks like pearl milk tea and passionfruit yogurt slush.
  3. Banh Mi & Bubble Tea: Situated at 935 Park Ave., this eatery combines Vietnamese cuisine with bubble tea offerings. Customers can enjoy authentic banh mi sandwiches alongside drinks such as coconut milk tea and lavender milk tea.

Conclusion

As the bubble tea phenomenon continues to grow in popularity, it is clear that these establishments are not just serving beverages; they are creating community spaces for social interaction and culinary exploration. With new shops entering the market and existing ones thriving, bubble tea is poised to become a staple in Rhode Island’s beverage landscape.
