Some mainland Chinese netizens recently reported experiencing heart palpitations, panic, and other symptoms after drinking the new “Wanli Mulan” milk tea from the tea chain Bawang Tea Ji. Some even ended up hospitalized overnight.
According to reports from Shangguan News and The Paper, netizens described experiencing symptoms such as heart palpitations, pain, and panic after consuming the milk tea. Some reported a rapid increase in heart rate, reaching up to 105 beats per minute after consumption.
In response to these reports, Bawang Tea Ji staff suggested that the symptoms may be due to an allergic reaction to tea polyphenols, as “Wanli Mulan” uses a black tea base. They advised customers experiencing discomfort to cease consumption immediately and seek medical attention.
The product ingredient list for “Wanli Mulan” reveals that it is made from a blend of black tea from various regions in Sri Lanka, along with high-quality milk and Ice Brown non-hydrogenated base milk. A large cup of “Wanli Mulan” reportedly contains approximately 625.1 mg of tea polyphenols and about 126 mg of caffeine, equivalent to the caffeine content of a medium cup of American coffee.
While Bawang Tea Ji has a branch in Singapore, it remains unclear whether “Wanli Mulan” milk tea has been introduced there. Efforts are underway to contact the Singapore branch for further information.
