ICMR Issues Warning: Excessive Consumption of Tea and Coffee Harmful to Health

India’s top health authority, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in collaboration with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), has recently released 17 new dietary guidelines aimed at promoting healthy eating habits among Indians. Among these guidelines, the ICMR has issued a cautionary note regarding the consumption of tea and coffee, highlighting potential health risks associated with excessive intake of these popular beverages.

According to the ICMR, individuals who frequently indulge in hot beverages such as coffee or tea may unknowingly be compromising their health. The guidelines emphasize the need for moderation in consumption and provide insights into the safest practices for enjoying tea and coffee.

One of the key recommendations outlined by the ICMR advises against consuming tea, coffee, or other caffeinated drinks in conjunction with meals or immediately after eating. This recommendation is rooted in the understanding that caffeine, a common component found in tea and coffee, possesses stimulant properties that can impact the central nervous system and potentially lead to physiological dependence.

By highlighting the potential risks associated with excessive caffeine intake, the ICMR aims to raise awareness among individuals about the importance of mindful consumption of tea and coffee. As consumers become more informed about the potential health implications, they can make informed choices to safeguard their well-being while continuing to enjoy these beloved beverages in moderation.
