Global Inspiration Blossoms into Vibrant Asian Fusion Eatery in Grand Rapids

Embracing the diverse flavors of Asia and the convivial atmosphere of international travel, Toastn’ Tea has emerged as a charming culinary destination in Grand Rapids. Nestled in a bustling strip mall at 2500 E Beltline Ave. SE, near Lake Eastbrook Boulevard, this restaurant beckons patrons to indulge in the pleasures of boba tea and an array of Asian fusion delights.

Since its grand opening in February 2023, Toastn’ Tea has evolved from its initial focus on boba tea to encompass a tantalizing menu of Asian-inspired cuisine. Owner Mai See Xiong traces the restaurant’s inception to her pre-pandemic adventures across the globe, with South Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan leaving an indelible mark on her culinary sensibilities.

“Before COVID, I got the opportunity to travel the world,” Xiong reminisced. “After that, all the travels were canceled just because of COVID.”

However, the unexpected hiatus prompted Xiong to reflect on her aspirations, ultimately leading to the realization of her dream: opening a business imbued with the essence of her familial heritage and her travels abroad.

“I just kind of wanted to bring all the things that I saw when I traveled overseas over to the Grand Rapids area,” she shared.

The menu at Toastn’ Tea reflects this eclectic vision, featuring a tantalizing array of dishes from various Asian countries. Vietnamese pho and Korean corn dogs stand out as perennial favorites among patrons. Complementing the savory offerings are a selection of meticulously crafted beverages, including the beloved brown sugar milk tea, ube milk tea, and layered lemonade drinks.

Beyond culinary delights, Toastn’ Tea aims to cultivate a welcoming environment for guests to unwind and connect. Comfortable seating arrangements, board games, and a picturesque photo backdrop beckon visitors to linger and savor the experience.

“I wanted people to come in here and just enjoy themselves,” Xiong expressed. “Whether you’re here to study or you’re here with friends, I wanted to create a space where people can come and just really enjoy themselves.”

Transitioning from a corporate career to entrepreneurship presented its challenges for Xiong, yet the journey has been profoundly rewarding. As an active proprietor involved in all facets of the business, from social media management to culinary innovation, Xiong finds fulfillment in the vibrant tapestry of her newfound vocation.

“I was so used to the eight to five job,” she reflected. “(Now) I’m a really active owner, I’m here almost 24/7. I do all my social media … I’m the main cook, I come up with new recipes. It’s been hard, but … it’s really rewarding as well.”

Toastn’ Tea stands as a testament to Xiong’s entrepreneurial spirit and her unwavering commitment to crafting a culinary haven where patrons can embark on a flavorful journey through Asia’s rich gastronomic landscape.
