Milk Tea: A Summer Staple and Thriving Business Venture

Known by various monikers such as milk tea, bubble tea, or boba tea, this beloved beverage has become a ubiquitous thirst-quencher, especially during the scorching summer months. Originating in the early aughts, it was initially dubbed “pearl shake” before evolving into the diverse and customizable drink we know today.

Reporter Mark Salazar of “24 Oras” recently embarked on a journey to explore the bustling milk tea scene across Romblon, Bacolod City, and Quezon City, delving into both the state of business for local shops and the evolving preferences of customers.

In Bacolod City’s Lacson Tourism Strip, one milk tea establishment stands out, selling an impressive 200 to 300 cups of milk tea daily. Among the favorites is the strawberry ice blended mix, offering a plethora of sinkers and toppings ranging from taro to grass jelly, catering to diverse palates.

Delivery rider Mark Carreon attests to the surging demand for milk tea, particularly during the sweltering summer season, as customers seek respite from the heat.

In Romblon’s Looc area, a quaint milk tea shop and restaurant has gained popularity with its avocado graham milk tea, symbolizing the unexpected success of the beverage in previously untapped markets. Owner Patty Sari recounts the humble beginnings of her venture in 2017 and expresses gratitude for the overwhelming local support.

Meanwhile, in Quezon City, Cobo Tea exemplifies the resilience of milk tea businesses amid challenges. Assistant manager Melia Peras shares the brand’s journey, from a peak of 14 stores to the setbacks caused by space acquisition and the subsequent pivot to virtual operations during the pandemic. Virtual stores have proven to be a lifeline, contributing significantly to sales and enabling the business to weather the storm.

For aspiring entrepreneurs looking to venture into the milk tea industry, opportunities abound, with suppliers offering business starter kits and training. From high-end ventures requiring substantial investments to smaller-scale enterprises accessible with modest capital, there is a niche for everyone in the flourishing milk tea market.

With its ever-evolving flavors, innovative concepts, and unwavering popularity, milk tea continues to captivate both entrepreneurs and consumers alike, cementing its status as a summer staple and thriving business venture.
