Sono Kitchen & Boba: A Fusion of Memories and Flavor

Street food isn’t just a culinary tradition in Asia; it’s a way of life—a fusion of flavors and memories that resonate deeply with locals and travelers alike. From the bustling markets of Taiwan to the vibrant streets of Indonesia, street food embodies the essence of instant gratification and community. It’s within this rich tapestry of flavors and cultures that Sono Kitchen & Boba finds its inspiration.

For Jerry Tseng, co-founder of Sono Kitchen & Boba, childhood memories of popcorn chicken and boba tea in Taiwan served as the catalyst for recreating those cherished flavors in Sedona and Flagstaff. Teaming up with Chuan Lu and Frank Yang, fellow enthusiasts of Asian cuisine and culture, Tseng embarked on a journey to bring a taste of his upbringing to the Arizona landscape.

Their paths converged at Northern Arizona University, where they pursued master’s degrees in business before venturing into the corporate world. Despite successful careers, the trio harbored a shared dream of entrepreneurship and a desire for a more relaxed lifestyle. With Tseng’s father, Jason Tseng, lending his culinary expertise and sage advice, the partners set out to create a culinary experience that melded Japanese and Taiwanese influences with fast-casual dining.

The result is Sono Kitchen & Boba, a culinary haven that pays homage to Tseng’s wife, borrowing its name from the Japanese word “sono.” From the quality boba teas made with real fruits to the authentic street food offerings like Pop ‘n Bo and Japanese donburi bowls, Sono Kitchen & Boba is a testament to the partners’ commitment to excellence and authenticity.

What sets Sono Kitchen & Boba apart is its dedication to scratch-made meals and premium ingredients imported from Taiwan. From hand-cut salt and pepper popcorn chicken to house-made noodles crafted by Jason Tseng himself, each dish is a labor of love, bursting with flavor and texture. And let’s not forget the boba teas—intensely flavored tapioca pearls swirling in a marbled concoction of milk, fruit, and tea—an irresistible treat for students and locals alike.

Despite the challenges of launching a new venture during a pandemic, Sono Kitchen & Boba has flourished, thanks to the partners’ unwavering commitment to quality and innovation. As they continue to expand their culinary empire, with plans to open a location in Phoenix, the future looks bright for Sono Kitchen & Boba—a true fusion of memories and flavor, serving up scratch-made meals and creating new memories, one sip and bite at a time.
