Preserving Tradition: Suni Chettan’s 103-Year-Old Tea Shop in Thrissur

In the bustling villages of Kerala, tea shops were once the vibrant centers of social interaction, where locals gathered for a cup of tea and lively conversations. Thatched roofs, brass samovars, steaming tea, and glass cupboards filled with snacks were emblematic of these establishments, now mostly relegated to memories of a bygone era. However, amidst the modernization, Suni Chettan’s tea shop in Padoor near Mullassery, Thrissur district, stands as a testament to tradition, still exuding its old-world charm after 103 years.

This iconic tea shop, opened by Suni Chettan’s grandfather, Velunni, a century ago, has remained virtually unchanged over the generations. Its thatched roof and mud-paved floor bear witness to decades of history, serving as a nostalgic retreat for villagers seeking a taste of the past and a moment of respite over a hot cup of tea. Managed today by Sunil, Velunni’s grandson, the shop continues to uphold its legacy, offering warm hospitality and buffalo milk tea, a tradition passed down through the family.

Despite the passage of time, Suni Chettan’s tea shop remains a beloved gathering spot for locals, where discussions range from current affairs to fond reminiscences, accompanied by the timeless melodies of the radio. While the shop once served lunch under Velunni and Madhavan’s management, Sunil has focused on preserving its original charm, drawing patrons for their daily dose of socializing and traditional snacks.

For the residents of Mullassery, Suni Chettan’s tea shop holds a special place in their hearts, symbolizing the enduring spirit of community and camaraderie across generations. Special gatherings on Sundays feature songs, poems, and, of course, hot tea, reinforcing the shop’s integral role in the fabric of daily life.

As the world evolves, the residents of Mullassery are determined to safeguard this cherished tradition, ensuring that Suni Chettan’s tea shop remains a timeless haven for generations to come.
