In a remarkable journey spanning just seven months, Kellie Tran (‘24) has transformed an abandoned VR arcade into a bustling boba shop located near Gonzaga University’s campus.
Reflecting on her journey, Tran remarks with a laugh, “I don’t even know how we got here. Basically, I was just studying, and then one day I wasn’t anymore.”
Uoni Bubble Tea & Coffee welcomed its first patrons in June and swiftly became a favored destination for both GU students and locals alike.
Tran explains the significance behind the shop’s name, stating, “I thought it was super fitting because ‘uoni’ in Korean means ‘older sister,’ and I kind of consider myself to be an older sister in the general sense.” Initially hesitant, Tran was persuaded by her boyfriend, who crafted the endearing logo, to embrace the name.
The inspiration for Uoni emerged during Tran’s early years at GU when she yearned for a high-quality boba shop closer to campus. Spotting the vacant space adjacent to Ultimate Bagel in November 2021, Tran seized the opportunity and approached her parents with her vision.
Despite spending the spring of 2022 studying abroad at the University of Oxford, Tran remained steadfast in her entrepreneurial aspirations. Her parents, though supportive, were unable to assist with the intricacies of obtaining building permits. Undeterred, Tran approached the process methodically, treating it akin to a school project.
Navigating legal complexities and cost-saving measures, Tran demonstrated her resourcefulness by personally creating the blueprints required for city submission, despite her lack of architectural expertise.
However, Tran’s true excitement stemmed from designing the menu. “I wanted fun boba,” she expresses, emphasizing her penchant for vibrant experiences. As such, Uoni’s menu offers a range of innovative drinks, including the Purple Moon and Rose Bellini, alongside taiyaki, a Japanese delicacy.
Now, juggling her academic pursuits and business responsibilities, Tran emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and resilience in managing life’s demands.
As she prepares to graduate with degrees in philosophy and economics, Tran remains committed to Uoni’s success. Reflecting on her journey, she shares, “Although there’s things we’re learning every day and there’s always things I can do better, it’s been a great experience. I think I’ve exceeded my own expectations, which is really nice to say when some days I’m just so overwhelmed I can’t see the progress that I have made.”
While Tran’s academic journey may be nearing its conclusion, her entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to Uoni promise a bright future ahead.
