New Sacramento Boba Shop Offers Self-Serve Experience with Affordable Prices

Sacramento’s latest addition to the boba scene, Honeybee Boba Cafe, offers a unique twist on the traditional bubble tea experience. Located at 6505 Folsom Boulevard, adjacent to the Sacramento State campus, Honeybee Boba Cafe is the area’s first self-serve boba bar, providing a budget-friendly option for boba enthusiasts.

Inspired by a family vacation where she spent over $50 on boba drinks, Sacramento resident Anh Luu created Honeybee Boba Cafe to reduce costs for both customers and the business. By eliminating the need for a large staff to prepare drinks, Luu is able to charge a flat rate of $6 per bubble tea with unlimited toppings. This self-serve model allows customers to personalize their drinks, choosing from six base flavors and around a dozen toppings, similar to a frozen yogurt shop.

“It’s student-friendly, it’s family-friendly and it’s also price-friendly,” Luu said. “Instead of people being able to afford to come up once a week, at $6 they can afford to come twice a week.”

Menu Highlights

Honeybee Boba Cafe’s offerings include non-dairy milk teas, fruit-flavored teas, and lemonades, with flavors that rotate regularly. On a recent Thursday, available flavors included Thai milk tea, jasmine milk tea, passion mango fruit tea, and dragonberry lemonade. Luu also introduced a toffee-flavored milk tea, which has quickly become her favorite.

Customers can sweeten their drinks with either cane sugar or locally sourced honey from The Bee Box. Toppings range from traditional tapioca boba to lychee jellies, strawberry popping boba, mango puddings, and crystal boba. Luu plans to expand the toppings selection to include red bean, taro bits, and fresh fruits in the coming months.

Beyond the self-serve bubble tea bar, Honeybee Boba Cafe offers Vietnamese coffee-based drinks and blended beverages. Food options include loaded waffles and musubi — rice patties topped with Spam, egg, bacon, or shrimp, and wrapped in dried seaweed, all priced under $8.

Luu collaborates with a local supplier and Pegasus Bakery and Café in Sacramento, co-owned by her business partner, to provide a range of Asian-fusion and American desserts. Offerings include Oreo cheesecake and red velvet cake, providing sweet treats to accompany the drinks.

“There’s really no dessert shop around here,” Luu said. “It’s nice to have a slice of cake to hold you over or to inspire you to study.”

Honeybee Boba Cafe is set to become a popular spot for students and families alike, offering a customizable, affordable, and delicious boba experience.
