Boba, or bubble tea, has become a ubiquitous presence in the beverage world, with new bubble tea shops seemingly sprouting up on every corner. From Kung Fu Tea to Gong Cha, the options abound, and even at-home boba kits are readily available in grocery stores, ensuring boba enthusiasts can indulge anytime, anywhere.
Joining the ranks of bubble tea purveyors is none other than Starbucks, which recently unveiled its highly anticipated 2024 summer menu, featuring its take on the beloved boba.
In a press release, Starbucks introduced its version of boba, featuring “raspberry-flavored pearls” that add a delightful chewiness to three of the new summer drinks. For those who can’t get enough of the chewy treats, they can now be added to any drink on the menu.
Drawing inspiration from East Asian beverages adorned with tapioca pearls, Starbucks focused on infusing its new creations with a “refreshing pop of flavor and color.” The trio of featured drinks boasts vibrant blue hues and is crafted from a tantalizing blend of raspberry, blueberry, and blackberry. Whether blended with water, lemonade, or coconut milk, each beverage promises a sweet and summery experience.
The move marks a strategic decision for Starbucks, capitalizing on the surging demand for bubble tea, particularly among Gen Z—the social media-savvy generation known for its penchant for fun and visually appealing food and drinks. With bubble tea gaining favor among celebrities and influencers, Starbucks is tapping into a trend that aligns seamlessly with the preferences of its youthful clientele.
While bubble tea undoubtedly steals the spotlight, Starbucks is also introducing a lineup of fruity new bakery items, including the Orange Cream Cake Pop and Pineapple Cloud Cake. To sweeten the deal further, Starbucks is offering discounts to its loyal customers: from May 15 to May 31, app users can enjoy 50% off one handcrafted beverage every Friday, while personalized offers will be available on Mondays from May 13 to May 27.
