Knaresborough is gearing up for a unique addition to its market scene next month with the upcoming opening of Mai Tea, a bubble tea shop introducing the Taiwanese sensation to the local community.
Bubble tea, also known as boba, is a Taiwanese concoction blending tea with milk, fruit, and fruit juice, accompanied by tapioca pearls. This drink, which has gained popularity since the 80s, is characterized by its diverse variations, flavors, and vibrant colors, offering a textural twist with edible translucent balls.
The owner, Shun Wang, a Harrogate resident originally from Guangzhou, China, envisioned opening a bubble tea store when she arrived in England 24 years ago. With the recent resurgence of interest in bubble tea, Wang believes Knaresborough is an ideal location, given the absence of such establishments in the vicinity.
Wang’s passion for bubble tea stems from her family’s love for the beverage, particularly her two adolescent daughters and their friends, who have a strong affinity for it. She sees her business attracting the younger generation, offering a novel spot for the community to explore and enjoy. Wang aspires for Mai Tea to be a comfortable and safe environment, not only for customers but also for employees, emphasizing fair wages for conscientious work.
The menu at Mai Tea is anticipated to boast an extensive selection of flavors, including customizable options. Wang plans to share her authentic Chinese bubble waffle recipe, intending to offer customers a unique and delightful experience. Despite the diverse array of flavors and benefits, she notes that bubble tea is often overlooked.
While initially anxious about the store’s opening, Wang’s excitement has soared with positive feedback on local Facebook groups. The average cost of bubble tea and waffles at Mai Tea is expected to be around £5.
As Mai Tea prepares to open its doors, Knaresborough residents can anticipate an infusion of Taiwanese flavors and a vibrant new spot to savor the diverse and delightful world of bubble tea.
