CAFFE:iN: A New Boba Haven Emerges on the Alameda

Nestled along the vibrant strip of restaurants, cafes, and shops lining the Alameda in Santa Clara, CAFFE:iN has boldly stepped into the limelight, aiming to solidify its presence in an area known for its diverse culinary offerings. Taking over the former Tea Plus location, this new boba spot has set out to capture the hearts of locals in a district that has seen its fair share of grand openings and transformations.

Originating from the East Coast, where the popularity of boba is not as widespread, the author embarked on a quest to understand the hype surrounding this beloved beverage. After numerous encounters with the “Grand Opening” sign during routine visits to Ike’s, the decision was made to explore CAFFE:iN, accompanied by a boba-savvy roommate named EJ.

Upon entering CAFFE:iN, the cozy interior with closely packed tables exuded a calm and intimate atmosphere. The ambiance was set by a lone student engrossed in their laptop and a small group indulging in boba and fries—a seemingly tranquil moment judging by their Yelp page traffic.

Perusing the menu, the author was pleasantly surprised to discover an extensive list of food options complementing the array of beverages. From Ramly burgers and popcorn chicken to curry fish balls and takoyaki, alongside enticing desserts such as creme brulee toast and mango crepes, CAFFE:iN showcased a diverse culinary repertoire.

The order included taro and strawberry milk teas, accompanied by spicy popcorn chicken and “Shake Shack fries.” With the milk teas priced just over $5 each and the total bill around $15, the cost was deemed reasonable considering the quality and generous portions.

The boba experience commenced with the ceremonial straw stab, leading to an appreciation of the beverage’s reputation akin to a milkshake. While the tapioca pearls presented an adjustment, the high quality and flavorful tea impressed both the author and boba connoisseur EJ, who bestowed it with a respectable “solid 7.5.”

The culinary journey continued with the arrival of the food, featuring noteworthy items like the “Shake Shack fries,” which, while not rivaling the iconic crinkle-cut standards, proved delectable. The spicy popcorn chicken, generously portioned and perfectly cooked, provided a tantalizing kick that necessitated a quick sip of the milk tea.

As the half-hour feast came to an end, the author and EJ uncovered a hidden gem—the establishment’s operating hours. CAFFE:iN welcomes patrons until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, extending its availability until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, positioning itself as a late-night haven for those seeking a culinary escape beyond the usual fast-food options.

Reflecting on the inaugural boba experience at CAFFE:iN, the author expresses enthusiasm for a return, eager to explore the diverse and enticing food offerings that make this establishment more than just a boba spot—it’s a culinary adventure waiting to be savored.
